Basics of Gas Chromatography
3-2 Split Injection Method
To maximize the separation performance of a capillary column, sample diffusion during injection must be prevented by introducing the sample as quickly as possible. If the component is highly concentrated, it will likely exceed the sample loading when loaded at full volume, resulting in poor peak shape and loss of separation performance. The split injection method improves this situation by introducing a portion of the injected material into the column and driving the remaining portion outside the system. With the split injection method, the performance of capillary columns can be fully demonstrated.
