Van Deemter plots (see Figure 1-4 in Chapter 1) shows that reducing the particle diameter not only improves the column efficiency but also maintains the high column efficiency at fast linear velocities, which allows for rapid analysis. However, it is important to keep in mind that reducing the particle diameter is accompanied by an increase in the column pressure (see Figure 1-3 in Chapter 1).
How to choose a column for rapid analysis
It is necessary to choose appropriate particle size and column length to perform rapid analysis. The comparison below shows the difference in the plate number of naphthalene obtained by various particle sizes and column lengths. It is possible to reduce the analysis time with a similar plate number by using a column packed with smaller particles and increasing the flow rate.
